Today I had to walk to the DMV to get a new driver’s license, because I am woefully inadequate as a driver (I hope to work on that soon). On the bright side, it was only a 20-minute walk from our house, and most of it was along a nice trail that follows the path of a stream.
When I got there, I learned that I needed my marriage certificate, which I failed to bring. I tried really hard to sincerely smile and thank the lady at the information desk delivering the bad news. On the bright side, I still have plenty of time before my previous license expires, and I don’t have a lot going on this week, so it won’t be hard to squeeze it in (aside from baby’s schedule, of course).
As I walked there and back, it was raining. Quite a bit, actually. On the bright side, it wasn’t cold, and the pairing of gray skies with trees coming back to life and the dashes of daffodils and hyacinth happily reminded me of an afternoon from our honeymoon in Portland when we hiked through some lush forested park paths in the rain.
About halfway through the walk home, I noticed that the blanket covering baby’s legs was soaked through. On the bright side, he didn’t seem to mind, and contentedly babbled to himself and gave me a wide smile whenever I peeked under the canopy to say hello.
Sometimes Mondays are a bummer. Sometimes (OK, often) it’s easy to let little things get you down. But for some reason, today I was able to look on the bright side, and for that I’m grateful.
